EBIT margin is usually used to compare operational efficiency and profitability of companies within the same industry. Taxes can vary by location thus excluding them from the calculation gives a better basis for comparing different companies.

EBIT and operating income are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference between them, which can cause the numbers to give different results. The key difference is that operating income does not include non-operating income, non-operating expenses, and other income.
